John Wood, son of John "the Mariner" Wood, is called John Wood of Middletown as his final home was in what is now Middletown, Rhode Island, where he died. His father, John Wood, the Mariner, is sometimes referred to as John Wood of Portsmouth. John Wood of Middletown was born in England in 1620 and died August 26, 1704, at eighty-four. He married his third wife, Mary Peabody, sometime before 1664. She and John are our ancestors.

John Wood was born in Newport, Rhode Island, in approximately 1664, based on his age at his death. He was the son of John Wood of Middletown and his third wife, Mary Peabody. Mary Church was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Church. She was born in Hingham in 1666 and moved with her parents to Little Compton in 1679. John and Mary had eleven children. Between March 8th and March 16th of 1711/12, six of their children died from diphtheria. This tragic loss is something that is hard to imagine in modern times. Fortunately, their oldest daughter, Mary, survived. She married Thomas Bailey Sr. and is they are the grandparents of Phoebe Bailey who married Isaac Hathaway Jr.
