Benedict Alford is our immigrant ancestor. He came to Windsor, Connecticut, and fought in the Pequot War. After the war, he returned to England and brought his brother, Alexander, and his sister, Joanna, back to Windsor. They were the children of Thomas Alford and Joan Hawkins.

Thomas Alford was the son of William Alford and Susan Rogerson. William was the son of the Reverend Alexander Alford and his wife, Agnes. We believe Alexander's father was John Alford, but we don't know his wife's name.

This booklet explores the lives of our English Alford Ancestors, including the origin of the name Alford and the migration of the Alfords to Somerset, Englsnd.

Benedict grew up in Whitestaunton, Somerset, England, the son of Thomas Alford and Joan Hawkins. His mother died in May of 1636, leaving Benedict and his siblings as orphans. He came to Windsor, Connecticut after his mother died looking to establish himself and take care of his siblings. Being young, healthy, and strong, the quickest way to make a name for himself was to serve as a soldier. He became a hero in Windsor and was given a land grant in 1640.

This is the story of the lives of Benedict and Jane Alford, our immigrant Alford ancestors.

Jeremy Alford was a first-generation colonial American and the youngest son of Benedict and Jane Alford, our immigrant ancestors. He was born in Windsor, Connecticut Colony, on December 24, 1655. Jeremy had three older brothers, Jonathan, Benjamin, and Josiah, who were ten, eight, and six years older than Jeremy, and one older sister, Elizabeth, who was four years old when Jeremy was born. Jeremy grew up, married, and spent his life in Windsor, Connecticut, the town his father Benedict helped build and defend from the Pequot Indians.

Jane was the seventh child of Anthony Hoskins and Isabel Browne Hoskins. She had three older sisters (Isabel, Grace, and Rebecca), three older brothers (John, Robert, and Anthony), ranging from three to fourteen years of age, and two younger brothers (Thomas and Joseph) who were one and three years younger than Jane.

Benedict Alford was the oldest child of Jeremiah (Jeremy) Alford and Jane Hoskins. He was born on April 27, 1688, in Windsor, CT, five years after the death of his paternal grandfather, for whom his parents named him. He had eight siblings, two of whom died in childhood and two others who died in their twenties.

On January 4, 1714, Benedict married Abigail Wilson in Windsor. Abigail was born on March 3, 1683, and was the daughter of Samuel Wilson and Mary Griffin. Fifteen years earlier, in 1699, Abigail's widowed mother had married Benedict's grandfather, Anthony Hoskins.

Benedict Alford was the oldest child of Benedict Alford and Abigail Wilson, born in Connecticut on August 27, 1716. He grew up on the family homestead in central Windsor, initially built by his Great-Grandfather, Sergeant Benedict Alford

Jerusha Ashly was the daughter of Joseph Ashly and Mary Steele, born in early 1723 and baptized on January 20, 1723, in Hartford. She married Benedict Alford on August 7, 1744, in Wintonbury Church, now in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Benedict and Jerusha had eight children before Jerusha died on January 18, 1761.

After Jerusha died, twenty-five-year-old Rebecca Owen came to care for the children. Rebecca was born November 28, 1736, the daughter of Elijah Owen and Hannah Higley Owen. Her father died when she was only five, and her mother remarried in 1743 when Rebecca was only seven, and Rebecca was raised by her grandfather. Rebecca Owen and Benedict Alford were married on December 18, 1761. They had seven children, four girls and three boys. We are descended from their son, Ashley Owen Alford.
