Philip Sherman was born on February 5, 1609/10, in Dedham, Essex, England.
His parents were Samuel Sherman and Philipa Ward.
Philip came to the new world in 1633 as part of the Great Migration,
settling in Roxbury, which is now part of Boston.
In November 1637, the General Court of Massachusetts disarmed, disenfranchised,
and forced into exile some of Anne Hutchinson's followers, Philip Sherman, was
among them. They moved to what was to become Rhode Island and established the
settlement of Portsmouth. Philip became a very important person in the founding of Rhode Island.
