William and Grace Bailey lived in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in the mid-1600s. They are our Bailey immigrant ancestors. John Bailey

John Bailey was the son of William Bailey, and the great-grandfather of Phoebe Bailey who married Isaac Hathaway. John's wife went by the name Sutton. There is some evidence, but no proof, that her maiden name was Lydia Sutton. John owned a Newport, and Little Compton. He left a substantial estate to his children and grandchildren.

Thomas Bailey

Thomas Bailey was the sixth child and fifth son of Lydia and John Bailey. He married Mary Wood, the daughter of John Wood and Mary Church. Thomas inherited a large farm and considerable wealth from his father. The home where they lived, which they willed to their son Thomas, Jr., is still standing today. John died when he was only forty-eight years old. Mary died when she was fifty-four.

Thomas Bailey Jr. was the second son of Thomas Bailey and his wife Mary Wood. Thomas married Mary Bennett what they were both very young as Mary was pregnant with their daughter Phoebe Bailey. Mary dies two years later giving birth to their son, who Thomas named Bennett Bailey. Thomas remarried twice, first to Abigail Lind with whom he had four children, and second to Deborah Carr with whom he had another four children. Thomas was a patriot during the Revolutionary war, and while he was too old to serve in Washington's army, he helped defend the home front, and was captured by the British and held prisoner on a war ship.
